Published by in News · 20/6/2017 11:06:32

SA Airlink (https://flyairlink.com/destinations/flights-to-cape-town) have been selected to fly to St Helena, but few other details are available. A very quiet announcement was made on the 9th June - unlike the fanfare that surrounded the previous press releases last year.

The next stage is signing contracts and agreeing schedules, and the rumours are that this may take until October! However, it does appear possible that we may have flights before the end of this year ...

Johannesburg – Airlink confirms and welcomes its selection by the St Helena Government as its preferred bidder to provide a commercial scheduled airline service to the South Atlantic island.

“This is a significant vote of confidence in Airlink and we look forward to the next step in the process leading to the formalisation of an agreement for what will be a historic step in St Helena’s development,” said Airlink CEO, Rodger Foster.

Airlink’s selection follows a demonstration of the capability of its newly acquired Embraer E-190 to land and take off from the recently built airport on St Helena island.   In April, Airlink also operated a special charter flight from Cape Town to St Helena.

The advent of regular scheduled flights to and from St Helena will end the islanders’ total dependence on the mail ship ferry service for transport of people and goods between the island and Cape Town, which, for many decades, has been the island’s sole transport connection with the African continent and the rest of the world.

“We anticipate being able to share details of the air service upon finalisation of negotiations with the St Helena Government,” added Mr Foster.

(About Airlink:
Johannesburg-based Airlink is privately owned and the largest regional feeder airline in southern Africa, linking more passengers to the smaller towns, cities and regional capitals than any other local airline. Airlink connects 37 destinations in 9 African countries.
The airline currently carries more than 1.4m passengers on approx. 46 000 flights annually. Airlink has shown growth in every single year of its existence. Our passenger profile represents approximately 40% leisure and 60% business.
Airlink will celebrate silver on 11 June 2017, marking 25 years of the current business iteration under the same consistent leadership.  Airlink’s real roots have precedent origins.  Lowveld Air Services, which began in 1967 is one root (50 years ago) and another is Midlands Aviation, which was formed in 1967.
